Finlay Park

Columbia, South Carolina

Named for former Mayor Kirkman Finlay, the downtown park was completed in 1990. Formerly known as Sidney Park, it was designed by landscape architect Robert Maryin of Walterboro, SC. The 18 acres are a magnet for people to walk, jog, skate or just to spend a pleasant hour.

Llamadas

One of the most important events of the carnival in Montevideo is the comparsas parade in the Sur and Palermo neighborhoods. The tradition comes from the time when black slaves were brought around the year 1700. With slavery abolition, they settled down in the conventillos, a kind of dwelling, and on Sunday they would celebrate the candombes. "Negros Lubolos", the first emsemble of black and white people, appear in the carnival of 1874. The "Llamadas" parade began in 1956.
